The stock market is about 30% off its all time highs and this make people interested in maybe getting involved. Anyone thinking about buying stocks for the first time may be overwhelmed at all the confusing terminology and how to understand what is going on in the stock market. Before you set out to risk your own money, you should do some research and understand what you are getting into.
While it is true that people have made fortune in the stock market, it is also true that people have lost millions as well. It is nothing like putting your money in a very safe bank certificate of deposit which is guaranteed by FDIC insurance. The risks are much higher but in return for taking that risk, there is an opportunity for a much higher return on your money as well.
In 2008 when the market was tanking, everyone had a first row seat to all the financial destruction that was everywhere. Retirement savings were lost by many and now baby boomers across the country are still working way past age 60. People who where too heavily invested in stocks found that in many cases, their life’s savings were seriously depleted.
It should be known to anyone thinking of buying stocks for the first timethat the risk is very real in stocks and they should not be investing money they need. That is what went wrong in 2008: too many people had their retirement money (that they now need) in stocks and so they are in a bad financial predicament here in 2010. Stocks are great for investing money that you can afford to lose but it is not the right choice for anything else.
Beginners should tread carefully in stocks before they get too involved. There is a lot to learn and much of it can only be learned through experience. You can read all the stock books in the world but nothing ever quite compares to the real life experience of buying and selling stocks yourself. It is amazing how some of your best stock picks will turn out to be losers and the ones you were more doubtful about end up being your best gainers. That is real experience that you can’t read about in any book or magazine.
